An incentive, non-pressured audition with sensible requirements.
Harris Young, Chairman of ALL non-competitive auditions.
1. Ferri Piano Associates, for pianists 18 years and under, for solo and ensemble.
2. Marian Hysko Adult, for pianists over 19 years of age.
3. Popular piano styles, all ages.
4. Ensemble, all ages.
For all Non-Competitive Auditions:
*Entry deadlines: Refer to back cover
Your dues must be paid to participate. Auditions are by appointment - no waiting!
These are the finest non-competitive auditions for the piano student. The program is
designed to encourage and motivate our students through recognition of a season of hard
work. Each year they receive a distinctive *GOLD PIN and a CERTIFICATE OF
ACHIEVEMENT. The Report Card measures progress from year to year.
*Gold pins are marked I, II, III, IV, etc. according to the year of entry.
You may enter as many pupils as you wish. NO LIMIT.If you carpool or wish to have students
heard consecutively, let us know. Specify early or late A.M. First come, first served.
Two pieces of your choice. Length of pieces is to be decided by the teacher. Remember, long,
repetitive pieces do not necessarily give a better showing. The choice is yours. Select pieces
in which your pupils excel and show to their advantage. Memorization of ALL pieces is
recommended, but at least one piece MUST be memorized. You may use any standard solos
or method books you wish.
No marks are given. We feel arbitrary marks have little meaning, and can vary as much as
ten or more points among judges hearing the same student, so why cause disappointment
among siblings and peers and invite studio problems? The critique speaks for itself.
Two different scales, major and/or minor. You make the selection. They may be played in
any style; similar or contrary motion, thirds, tenths, hands alone or together, whatever your
studio professes. If you feel your student is too young or on a very elementary level, he need
not play scales at all.
Optional - Only those students who are interested need apply. To participate, the Theory
request box next to entrant’s name must be checked. Before the Piano Exam, the student
will be given an oral exam on any one of the pieces performed. Students should know how
to count, name of clef signs, key signature and dynamic signs in Italian and English.
Example: (F) Loud in English, Forte in Italian. They should also be able to explain note
values, slurs and whatever else is on the printed page.
We pride ourselves on a smooth-running Audition Center. No unnecessary waiting.
All fees are non-refundable and no credit is given for any reason. Entrant’s fee for
EACH solo, ensemble and assisting performer: $35 per person.
Only students may accompany or assist entrants in any capacity at auditions and at our
concert. This includes page turners. Assisting performers, if selected as winners, are
expected to fulfill all obligations of a regular winner, including sale of tickets, etc.
Entering students after the deadline will incur a $20.00 teacher’s LATE FEE.
Rules and regulations: Ours are special competitions, serving the needs of only the very
gifted students who show a flair for performance. Please read carefully.

competitions/audition site must stay in the waiting area (after checking in with the receptionist). Listening at the door and/or
wandering through the hallways is strictly forbidden.
- Warm-up permitted, ONE SCALE ONLY! No pedal extenders or foot rests are permitted at audition or recital.
- Winners are chosen when the following points are outstanding; repertoire, poise, stage deportment, tone, pedaling, style and memory.
They must be dressed appropriately. A neat and well-groomed appearance does count.
- You select your own repertoire. Since you are the judge of what your pupil performs best, choose wisely. All music must be memorized
and a working copy presented to the judge. A judge reserves the right to stop a performance at any time.
- Awards are given to winners only. Winners are chosen at the first hearing.
The competition is held on ONE day only. Winning teachers will be notified by phone the following day, not before.

- Brief critiques are given. We know you are sending your best students; however, the judge is the sole selector of the winner and his
decision is final.

- NOTE: TOO MANY PEOPLE ADD TO CROWDING AT OUR HEARING CENTERS, SO PLEASE REMEMBER THAT HEARINGS ARE PRIVATE AND

- Selection of Competition Winners: Adjudicator’s decisions are final and we reserve the
right to declare no winner if the high standards of P.T.S.A. are not attained.
ENTER YOUR MOST GIFTED.
- Members may enter as many teams or soloists as desired in any of our competitions.
- All selections are the choice of the teacher and student. We do not use a printed syllabus.
- Please inform parents/students NOT to call our studio or office. INQUIRIES ARE TO BE MADE ONLY BY TEACHERS.
- Fees for Auditions and Competitions are non-refundable and no credit is given for any reason. Entrant’s fee for EACH solo, ensemble,
and assisting performer: $35 each. Only students may accompany or assist entrants in any capacity at auditions and at our concert. This

including the sale of tickets, etc. Entering students after the deadline will incur a $20.00 teacher’s LATE FEE.
- Notice about our recitals: It is an honor shared by all of us to attend our outstanding recitals. They warrant not only our attention,
but our praise and respect. We are now instituting a ruling that we feel is necessary to show the solidarity and interest which
make any live recital a success.
Please note the following:
- Performing students are to remain for the entire recital.
- Teachers of performing students must be present for the entire recital.
- Teachers and students must be present for the awards presentation or forfeit their awards.
- Teachers who cannot attend these functions or remain for the entire event are respectfully asked not to enter their students.
- Please keep babes in arms at home.
It is imperative that you honor the following guidelines!
- Repertoire Change:
No overlapping of repertoire is allowed between competitions. Every entrant must use different repertoire for each competition.
Entrants may NOT use material that they performed in a previous year’s competition. NO EXCEPTIONS. Sonatina or Sonata
movements are excluded in every solo competition except Slenczynska, Chamber Music and the Sonatina-Sonata Competition.
- Repertoire Ruling
If you are a member of any other music organization, you may not enter your students in any of our competitions with the same
repertoire that appears on their printed syllabus from the current or previous year. Failure to follow this ruling will result in
disqualification. Call for clarification if needed.
- Please take note: Send all written inquiries, applications, etc. to the Denville Headquarters,
in care of the Chairperson(s) in charge of the event.
- FOR STUDENTS OF PAID MEMBERS ONLY. All students must be entered under the name of the teacher with whom they are studying. If your
studio uses teaching assistants, those teachers must each join P.T.S.A. in order to enter students in any of our events. If your
student is declared a winner, you have the option of listing your name as studio head along with your assistant’s name. Non-compliance
with the ruling will result in forfeiture of all prizes and certificates and termination of teacher membership.
Teacher dues are $40/year, collected every April.
